What is Data Science and Why Does it Matter?

Data science is the art and science of extracting knowledge and insights from data. Data science combines statistics, computer science, and domain expertise to extract meaningful information from large and complex data sets. It involves collecting, cleaning, analyzing, and modeling data to uncover trends, patterns, and relationships. Data scientists use these insights to solve problems, make predictions, and support decision-making in various industries.

Domain specialization is critical in data science. Data scientists working in a particular domain need to understand its terminology, regulations, and common data types. This allows them to tailor their analysis and ask the right questions of the data. Different domains produce different data structures (e.g. genomic data vs. social media sentiment). Understanding these structures is essential to choosing the right techniques. Last but not least, insights without industry context are less actionable. Domain expertise helps data scientists communicate findings in a way that’s relevant to stakeholders in that domain.
